(There but for the)

A whole new student

Dr Barry Oreck was busy teaching a crash course to teachers on leadership and special needs education at Bayan Bilingual School in Hawally when I met him last Friday. A traveling teacher-educator, Barry is an adjunct professor of international graduate programs for educators at Buffalo State University, New York.

On his classroom desk in Bayan, there was a copy of Daniel Pink's bestseller 'A Whole New Mind', a book that says right brainers will rule the world. Barry, together with his student-teachers had a compromise on Pink's premise: No, we don't want the right brainers; we are looking for the holistic person, one who teaches with both sides of the brain.

Barry agrees that a student-oriented education is a challenge anywhere, whether in the US or in the Middle East. Teachers tend to hesitate to make changes that may be disruptive. To make students independent, autonomous learners, a project-based, research-inclusive and unrestrictive curriculum is what we may need, says Barry. Teachers are facilitators who need to balance what to let the students learn and how to make the lesson dynamic, all the while maintaining control and drawing the line between exerting authority and permitting freedom.

Barry's tips:
Surprise your students: Set the students' tables in a different way. When the students come to class, ask them to find something that is hidden. The treasure could be a painting, a map, a protractor or even a hamster! On another day, turn off the lights in the classroom!

Bring passion into your teaching: If the teachers are passionate about a topic, it spreads to the students. If the teacher is covering a subject simply for the sake of doing so, the students will quickly sense so. As is the teacher, so are the students.

History is boring? Hold a debate: Many teachers complain that their students do not like writing. Ask them to describe their last visit to their favorite mall. You could trigger a good lesson on descriptive writing. If the lesson on elections goes over students' heads, convene a mock parliament. And you, the teacher, you be the Speaker!

Act out your lesson: Teachers do not have to be theater personalities, nor musicians, nor dancers; the students are all of these! The teacher is the director amid sparkling talent. Role playing is exciting both for participants as well as spectators.

Channel kids' interests to support learning: Most kids like football. Let them research biographies of footballers. Give them writing assignments on cars, cooking or cabiri. (But not cocaine, caress or cabala. You should respect the culture of the place where you are teaching.)

Barry also says that many of the strategies that teachers apply to a special needs class are also applicable to other classes. Making a lesson active and visual is always appreciated. Today's education field is vibrant, he agrees, with learners having a wide range of scope and scale, with education moving from a teacher-centered, test-oriented style to learner-centered, value-oriented process, where both sides of the brain are alive and active. Here, the teacher's job is to help prepare tomorrow's people for tomorrow's jobs. Daniel Pink would agree there.

performance poetry or cholkazhcha

http://kuwaittimes.net/read_news.php?newsid=NjAzNzE1OTc5MA==

Learning one's culture in a foreign land is what is happening to some 25 Indian expats in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh. The 25 individuals gather every evening at the Indian Central School under the supervision of two visiting theater personalities for their practice of, arguably, one of the rarest art forms in the world now: visualization poetry. This art form denotes the exploration of the visual possibilities of a poem through oral recitation, dance, music and movements. Their one-hour performance will be staged next Friday in three segments at the Indian Central School, during the annual Tug of War competition organized by Thanima, Kuwait.

The performers will visualize around ten poems by well-known Indian poets. These poems, rich in content, folkloric in structure and unpretentious in appearance tell the story of a culture replete with the clash of tradition and modernity, variation of values and the gulf between the roots and fruits of a moving people. At the same time, these poems represent a culture that is fast evolving and in a constant flux.

Though the term 'performance poetry' was in use in the early 1980s and oral tradition has been the method for poetics since tribal times, today's generation may not have seen the acting out of a poem on stage. "It's modernly visual and at the same time nostalgic," says Madhu Shankaramangalam, the visiting guru of the poetry performance or, in the performers' words, Cholkazhcha. Madhu, on his first trip to Kuwait in his 30-year journey as a theater personality, stage director and associate filmmaker is happy about with his team's commitment. "Back home people have no time for art. But here I see people coming from work, practicing until 10pm, and then linger around with questions", he said.

MK Gopalakrishnan, another visiting theater instructor, told me about the impact of poetry on people. A few years ago, he said, it was the poet who would recite a poem to an audience. Talented actors replaced poets over the course of time and now we have an abundance of talent. Poetry is independent of books, academics and from its very form. Gopalakrishnan, 63, an actor for more than 30 years, shared an experience his troupe had while performing a ten-minute poem about a family dispute over dowry. "The audience like our performance so much that they requested an encore," he said.

Cartoon poetry is another genre the performers will stage next Friday. Popularized by the late Indian poet Dr K Ayyappa Panikkar, cartoon poetry connects and communicates with people all over. Here is a loose translation of a few lines of Panikkar, "Protect me, though I'm a bore; Make me a lover of surplus budget; Give me abundance of goal that it may reach from lakhs (of rupees) to crores (of rupees).

When choosing a poem for performance, what we look for is its visual possibilities and stage impact," said Babuji Batheri, of Thanima, the organization which will hold the cultural event next Friday. Over the years we had concerts; this year we're going for a change, added Rose Kattukallil, another coordinator of the event.

As well as the 25 performers there are many others who are behind the effort, including Madhu Bhaskar who provided photos for this story. The performers are due to sing as well as play Indian folk instruments as part of the performce. Iqbal Kuttamangalam, a partaker in the Cholkazhcha could not hide his glee. "I wanted to sing or act or play a musical instrument on stage. I can do all three at this event!

Palestinian promotes education through IB

http://kuwaittimes.net/read_news.php?newsid=MTcwOTIyMTE3NA==

At 65, Hala Fadda still dances in the classroom - a place where diverse groups of learners work together as if trying to solve a puzzle. The Palestinian-British teacher with 40 years of experience behind her does not feel the urge to control her vibrant students unless disciplinary issues arise. She believes that students have no time to be naughty once they are exposed to the new world of learning -where the curriculum framework has turned truly global.

The educational program is called IB (International Baccalaureate). Formed around 1999 by a group of visionary educational enthusiasts, IB is a program that 'aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people that help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect'.

Hala was in Kuwait last weekend at Kuwait Bilingual School (KBS), Jahra, which follows the IB Primary Years Program. She held two workshops separately for the Arabic and the English teaching staff. "I'm happy that they didn't shoot me," Hala quipped. She dispelled the myth of change-resistant teachers that have settled into comfort zones, "The 85 teachers at the Jahra school are ready to take up IB, good news for Jahra and for Kuwait," she said. She spent an entire working day with primary students as well, singing with them, reading out stories set in the Arabian deserts enlivened by local characters.

Hala believes in taking a trans-disciplinary approach to learning, supporting her views with examples using children's books to write specifically about the Arabian Gulf, history, literature, culture, myths and legends. Without downplaying the importance of essential elements in education, IB underlines ongoing assessment and effectiveness of collaborative planning in an international curriculum that caters to the needs of tomorrow's global citizens. In Kuwait, KBS Jahra has been running the IB preliminary program for the second consecutive year.

Hala's workshop was an inspiring experience for staff members. Teachers were highly enthusiastic about participating in the workshop, said Rebecca Hawtin, the IB Coordinator at KBS. "This was a culture swapping experience," said an American teacher, recalling a story that Hala read out. In the story, 'The Sandwich Swap', Lily and Salma, American and Arab characters come to accept and respect two cultures symbolized through the peanut butter and jelly sandwich and the hummus-pita sandwich, after displaying an initial reluctance. "The story spans across continents and transcends our mind." Hala had a piece of advice to teachers when she was leaving KBS: 'Do not work more than your students'.
