Thursday midnight: Kuwait isn't sleeping. Parties, gatherings, functions, and discussions over dinner that might lead to morning coffee. For most people, the following day is a holiday. But some are too busy burning the midnight oil the whole weekend to even notice it's a weekend!
When the weekly duty schedule arrives, some nurses love to hate their Thursday night duty. Working at the weekends is a nightmare they share with nurses all over the world for a common reason: weekend emergency cases. Not only are the number of accident cases alarmingly on the rise in Kuwait, but also the country's uninvited weekend guest - sandstorms - make many asthmatic patients rush to the hospital which makes the whole night a never-ending rush hour. Food poisoning, fatigue, anemia... the weekend case
list can only get worse. Add to this, you have people who come out only after twilight for a simple routine check-up.
Our casualty area is usually prepared for the weekends with extra equipment and medicines," says Achamma, a senior nurse in a local Ministry of Health hospital. Cases known as the Four A's dominate weekend shifts: Alcohol, Accidents, Asthma, and Abuse. There are people who resort to illicit liquor - especially on weekends - in a bid to chase happiness and later drive back home in an inebriated state. Then their route to happiness takes a wrong turn and they end up in the hospital.
On average, we receive five to eight accident cases every weekend. If a weekend has an extra holiday attached to it, the number of outpatients is higher," says Nidheesh, a male nurse at Mubarak Al-Kabeer hospital. For him, "Mubarak is where people immediately think of heading to since the medical college is affiliated to it. So we have many casualty cases which we refer to other hospitals after the initial treatment.
Nidheesh laughs about the male nurses' added nightmare of carrying patients who are huge in size.
My female colleagues naturally expect the other male nurses or me to physically deal with male patients who are aggressive in nature," says Nidheesh. "We've also had instances where our doctors were physically assaulted by some irate patients.
A weekend party is a good reason for people with psychosomatic illnesses. After the party, they flock to the hospital demanding various check-ups. "Feeling uneasy is the symptom," says another emergency nurse. "But when they see that the casualty department does not even have a spare bed, they wait impatiently, if not intolerantly.
Paediatric Casualty is another example where the patience of medical staff is always put to test. Babies crying non-stop, parents growing impatient, and the edginess experienced at the difficulty of finding a miniscule vein to administer drips are common scenes during a harrowing weekend. But it's quite sad to notice that parents sometimes wait for the weekend to bring the child to the hospital. What could have been solved by a simple injection ends up requiring more attention. "Children almost always get
the common cold," says Tony, a pediatrician. "But parents unnecessarily panic and say, 'Doctor, could you check if my child has swine flu?'
Older children bruising themselves and ending up with fractures is a common problem during the holidays. Nurses on night duty get phone calls from their own teenage kids saying: 'Mom, brother hasn't come home yet." When she responds with a curt "Tell your dad," the next remark is likely to puzzle her more: "Dad isn't home either!

high school part-timers
The computer lab has about 20 students, wide awaken, experimenting with the Photoshop gimmicks they have just learnt. They don’t call their instructor with a mister prefix as they used to at their foreign school. Here they are at a private institute in Jahra and their instructor is just 15 years old. The ‘teacher’ who is running between them guiding to solve their unending problems, seems tireless and excited because of the extra bucks he is making per hour.
Nasir Hatem, the computer instructor, got the idea to work as a part timer from his schoolmate in Kuwait City. “This friend of mine,” says Nasir, “went to America last summer for two weeks and he worked at a restaurant there just for fun”. For Nasir, however, fun was the least reason he opted to work in this summer. In a way it is crisis turned into an opportunity. “I wanted to get some exposure. I felt insecure and inferior because my friends in city would always pick on me saying I’m from Jahra, no matter my defending, so what?” Now that Nasir is getting confident day by day interacting with his intermediate students – one is his own brother – he is only overjoyed at his city friends’ request; when shall we visit you at the institute?
“At first I was horrified at the idea of working,” admits Nasir. “I thought I simply couldn’t do it. But my father gave me a pat, encouraging I’ll be dealing with kids like my brothers. The institute manager has been very kind to me as well”. Nasir said that the idea to work and earn never occurred to him because of his well to do Kuwaiti background. He plans to continue his teaching over weekends, something his father reluctantly agreed to.
In Kuwait, the army of working teenagers is on the rise. Young boys who are selling windshields at the signals or DVDs on the co-op pavements are only one side of the coin. “Many of my friends have found work this summer,” says Nasir who is at the institute everyday for two hours in the evening. Nasir’s grade 10 friends who are working are lucky to get a work experience at their family businesses. They help their fathers or even substituting them. One such helper is Hashim, 16 year old who is the acting cashier at his father’s photocopy center in Mirqab. Hashim’s father runs another shop a few lanes away and is on business trips off and on. “Actually my elder brother is in-charge,” says Hashim, “But I like to be in the shop because if I’m home I’ll only be watching TV”.
These youngsters opt to work in their leisure times for a variety of reasons: The work experience as a base for their further studies and career; the creative and constructive use of time; the inevitable training for future; the need for self-assertion to be stars among the peers and the sheer joy of feeling adult.
However, teenagers who are working do not always fall into the category of white-collar, salubrious and sedentary job seekers. Ahmed, an 18-year-old Syrian knows not the convenience of cash desk nor the comforts of commanding. He’s a car mechanic at his uncle’s shop in Hawally, bathed in grease and gas every afternoon. In the morning he is a student at an institute doing a computer course. He opted to work for the money he has to spend as a student. “My uncle tells me, if I don’t study now it will never happen in my life. I know how to change oil and how to fix a flat tire. But I also want to know bits of computer so that my friends won’t tease me”.
Next summer, Ahmed wants to buy a computer. “Hamdul illa, he doesn’t want to buy a car”, says his proud uncle, beaming.

ഉയരക്കുറവ് ചാടിക്കടന്ന ഡോക്ടര്

ആ കമ്പനിക്ക് എന്നെ വല്ലാതെ ബോധിച്ചിരുന്നു. നാട്ടിലേക്ക് പോകുമ്പോള് മംഗലാപുരം വരെയുള്ള എയര് ടിക്കറ്റ് മാത്രമല്ല, അവിടെ നിന്നു 130 കിലോ മീറ്റര് ദൂരമുള്ള എന്റെ പള്ളിപ്പറമ്പ ഗ്രാമത്തിലേക്കുള്ള ടാക്സിക്കൂലി വരെ കമ്പനി തന്നു. എന്നെക്കൊണ്ട് ആളുകള് കരുതുന്നതിലപ്പുറം ചെയ്യാനാകും എന്ന് എനിക്ക് ബോധ്യപ്പെട്ട നാളുകളായിരുന്നു അത്. അങ്ങനെയാണു കൂടുതല് പഠിക്കണമെന്നും ഉയരണമെന്നുമുള്ള ചിന്തയുണ്ടായത്.
അക്കാലത്ത് വായിച്ച ഒരു പുസ്തകത്തില് അമേരിക്കയിലെ സി ഐ എ യില് ടോപ് ഒഫീഷ്യലായിരുന്ന ഒരാളെപ്പറ്റി അറിയാനിടയായത് നിമിത്തമായി. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഇരു കൈകള്ക്കും സ്വാധീനമില്ലായിരുന്നു. എന്നിട്ടും പകയോടെ ജീവിതത്തെ ജയിച്ചു. കാലുകള് കൊണ്ടാണു വണ്ടിയോടിക്കുക, കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറില് വര്ക്ക് ചെയ്യുക. എനിക്ക് പക്ഷേ വാശിയൊന്നുമില്ലായിരുന്നു. പടച്ചവന് എന്നെ ഒരു കാലത്തും അഷ്ടിക്ക് ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. നല്ല പ്രായത്തില് തന്നെ നല്ലോരു ഭാര്യയെ തന്നു; രണ്ട് മക്കളെ തന്നു. മകന് നെറ്റ്വര്ക്ക് സ്പെഷ്യലിസ്റ്റാണു. മകള് സലാലയില് ഭര്ത്താവും 2 കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളോടുമൊപ്പം.നിങ്ങള് ചോദിച്ച പോലെ അവരൊക്കെ നോര്മലാണോ എന്ന് പലരും ചോദിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. നോക്കൂ ഞാന് നോര്മലായ ഒരു വ്യക്തിയാണു. ഉയരക്കുറവ് എന്റെ മനസിനെയോ ശരീത്തേയോ ബാധിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. കല്യാണം കഴിക്കുന്നതിനു മുമ്പായി എന്നെ പരിശോധിച്ച ഡോക്ടര് പറഞ്ഞു. യൂ ആര് പെര്ഫക്റ്റ്ലി ഓള്റൈറ്റ്!

ഒരിക്കല് മിര്ഗാബ് ബസ്സ് സ്റ്റോപ്പില് നില്ക്കുകയായിരുന്ന എന്റെയടുത്ത് ഒരു കുവൈറ്റി വന്ന് പരിചയപ്പെട്ടു. ഒരു ടെലി സീരിയല് നിര്മ്മിക്കുന്നു. താങ്കള് വന്നാല് സന്തോഷം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. ഷൂട്ടിങ്ങിനു ചെന്നപ്പോഴല്ലേ, എന്റെയത്രയും തന്നെ പൊക്കമുള്ള മറ്റു മൂന്നു പേരെ കണ്ടു. ഒരു സ്വദേശി,ഒരു യമനി ഒരു അഫ്ഗാനി. തമ്മില് ഭേദമുള്ളയാളെ സെലെക്റ്റ് ചെയ്യാനായിരിക്കുമെന്നാണു വിചാരിച്ചത്. താമസിയാതെ പിടി കിട്ടി. ഞങ്ങളെല്ലാം അതിലുണ്ട്.
അതൊരു കുള്ളന് കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ കഥയായിരുന്നു. കുള്ളനായ അച്ഛനു അതേ ഉയരത്തില് മൂന്ന് മക്കള്. അച്ഛന്റെ ഫുട്ബോള് ഭ്രാന്ത് കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ ബിസിനസിനെ ബാധിക്കുന്നതും മറ്റുള്ളവര് നിസ്സാരന്മാരായി കണ്ടിരുന്ന ഞങ്ങള് മക്കള് കുടുംബകടം തീര്ക്കുന്നതുമാണു കഥ. ക്ളൈമാക്സില് എന്റെ കഥാപാത്രമാണു എതിരാളി കമ്പനിക്ക് രണ്ട് ലക്ഷത്തി അമ്പതിനായിരം ദിനാറിന്റെ ചെക്ക് കൊടുക്കുന്നത്.

ചെയ്തു. ഏതാണ്ട് 12 വയസു മുതല്ക്കാണു ഗ്രോത്ത് ഹോര്മോണ് ബാധിക്കുന്നത്. വര്ഷങ്ങളോളമെടുത്താണു അതുമായി സമരസപ്പെട്ടത്. പഠിത്തം കഴിഞ്ഞിറങ്ങിയ ഉടന് കണ്ണൂരിലെ ലോ ചേംബറില് സെക്രട്ടറിയായി ജോലി കിട്ടി. കുവൈറ്റില് വരാനും വിഷമമുണ്ടായില്ല. ഇപ്പോള് ബ്രൂണയ്ക്കടുത്ത് ബോര്ണിയോ ദ്വീപില് ബിസിനസുകാരനായ ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്റെ സുഹ്റ്ത്ത് വഴിയാണു കുവൈറ്റിലെത്തുന്നത്. 25 ദിനാര് ശമ്പളത്തില് ടൈപിസ്റ്റായി ആദ്യ ഉദ്യോഗം. അന്ന് 36 ദിനാറാണു ആയിരം രൂപക്ക്. ആ ജോലിയില് നിന്നും താമസിയാതെ ഒരു സ്പാനിഷ് ടെക്സ്റ്റൈല് കമ്പനിയില് കയറി. 120 ദിനാര് ശമ്പളം. ആ കമ്പനിയിലെ സെക്രട്ടറി ജോലി കൂടുതല് ഉത്തരവാദിത്വമുള്ളതായിരുന്നു. താങ്ങാനാകും എന്ന് സ്വയം പറഞ്ഞ് ആത്മവിശ്വാസം വളര്ത്തിയെടുത്തു.
ആ കമ്പനിക്ക് എന്നെ വല്ലാതെ ബോധിച്ചിരുന്നു. നാട്ടിലേക്ക് പോകുമ്പോള് മംഗലാപുരം വരെയുള്ള എയര് ടിക്കറ്റ് മാത്രമല്ല, അവിടെ നിന്നു 130 കിലോ മീറ്റര് ദൂരമുള്ള എന്റെ പള്ളിപ്പറമ്പ ഗ്രാമത്തിലേക്കുള്ള ടാക്സിക്കൂലി വരെ കമ്പനി തന്നു. എന്നെക്കൊണ്ട് ആളുകള് കരുതുന്നതിലപ്പുറം ചെയ്യാനാകും എന്ന് എനിക്ക് ബോധ്യപ്പെട്ട നാളുകളായിരുന്നു അത്. അങ്ങനെയാണു കൂടുതല് പഠിക്കണമെന്നും ഉയരണമെന്നുമുള്ള ചിന്തയുണ്ടായത്.
അക്കാലത്ത് വായിച്ച ഒരു പുസ്തകത്തില് അമേരിക്കയിലെ സി ഐ എ യില് ടോപ് ഒഫീഷ്യലായിരുന്ന ഒരാളെപ്പറ്റി അറിയാനിടയായത് നിമിത്തമായി. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഇരു കൈകള്ക്കും സ്വാധീനമില്ലായിരുന്നു. എന്നിട്ടും പകയോടെ ജീവിതത്തെ ജയിച്ചു. കാലുകള് കൊണ്ടാണു വണ്ടിയോടിക്കുക, കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറില് വര്ക്ക് ചെയ്യുക. എനിക്ക് പക്ഷേ വാശിയൊന്നുമില്ലായിരുന്നു. പടച്ചവന് എന്നെ ഒരു കാലത്തും അഷ്ടിക്ക് ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. നല്ല പ്രായത്തില് തന്നെ നല്ലോരു ഭാര്യയെ തന്നു; രണ്ട് മക്കളെ തന്നു. മകന് നെറ്റ്വര്ക്ക് സ്പെഷ്യലിസ്റ്റാണു. മകള് സലാലയില് ഭര്ത്താവും 2 കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളോടുമൊപ്പം.നിങ്ങള് ചോദിച്ച പോലെ അവരൊക്കെ നോര്മലാണോ എന്ന് പലരും ചോദിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. നോക്കൂ ഞാന് നോര്മലായ ഒരു വ്യക്തിയാണു. ഉയരക്കുറവ് എന്റെ മനസിനെയോ ശരീത്തേയോ ബാധിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. കല്യാണം കഴിക്കുന്നതിനു മുമ്പായി എന്നെ പരിശോധിച്ച ഡോക്ടര് പറഞ്ഞു. യൂ ആര് പെര്ഫക്റ്റ്ലി ഓള്റൈറ്റ്!

കുവൈറ്റിൽ ടെലിഫിലിം ചിത്രീകരണമാരംഭിച്ചു
പ്രവാസി മലയാളികളുടെ ഗൃഹാതുരത്വപ്രേരിതവും നഷ്ട സ്മരണോന്മുഖവുമാായ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ നേർപകുതിയെന്നു പറയാവുന്ന, ഒരു സാധാരണ വർൿഷോപ് തൊഴിലാളിയുടെ ജീവിതത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഒരേട്, 30 മിനിറ്റ് ദൈർഘ്യമുള്ള ടെലിഫിലിമിന്റെ ചിത്രീകരണം കുവൈറ്റിലെ മെഹ്ബൂളയിൽ ആരംഭിച്ചു. മൂന്നോ നലോ വെള്ളിയാഴ്ചകളിലായി ഷൂട്ടിങ്ങ് തീർക്കാനാണു ഉദ്ദേശിക്കുന്നതെന്ന് ടെലിഫിലിമിന്റെ രചയിതാവും സംവിധായകനുമായ ഷെമിജ് കുമാർ ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ പൂജക്കു ശേഷം പറഞ്ഞു. സാറ്റലൈറ്റ് അവകാശം വിൽക്കുന്നതിനോടൊപ്പം ഷോർട്ട് ഫിലിം മേളകൾക്കായും ചിത്രം അയക്കുമെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു.

ന്യൂയോര്ക്ക് ജല്ലിക്കട്ട്, മഡോണ ഫൌസെറ്റ്

Bored of a long drive through the heavy traffic of the Fourth Ring Road? Feeling lonely or sleepy while commuting from Jahra to Kuwait City? Sandwiched between work and home schedules without any relaxation? Not for these bunch of employees. They enjoy their ride together and have no time to curse bumper-to-bumper drives. They share their daily work experiences and get feedback on a regular basis. They have fun as they go to and from work. They are carpoolers.
Car pooling is not new to Kuwait. There are many companies that arrange joint transport for employees. Many companies provide convenience for their employees, but sharing one's way to work for the sake of sharing - with money playing no role - is rare. For them, driving is a team effort, and the chance of the driver falling asleep is nil. It's a car community. In this 'many-in-one' ride, some choose to be drivers using their car throughout the year. Some groups take weekly turns to use their individual car
s. These groups, though the members each have their own cars, choose to travel in a group for several reasons. From energy saving efforts to environmental concerns, from companionship to feelings of community or to save on fuel. Sometime they do it just for fun. Or, in their own words:
I hate traffic.
I don't want the stress of driving.
I want company away from my company.
I am scared to drive alone.
I like to be with my friends, and transport-time is the only chance.
Amal, a Palestinian teacher who lives in Hawally and works in Jahra, accommodates four of her colleagues in her car as an act of kindness. "If my colleagues arrange transport, it is expensive and Jahra is any taxi driver's last choice," said Amal, adding, "Every month, we have a fast-food party to demonstrate our joy!
For Feras, Saleh, Magdy and Ravinder, the car is a "home away from home." "It's a man's world. When with family, we are husbands who shoulder responsibilities, but while on the road, we just forget ourselves," said Feras, who shoulders the driver's role. They discuss politics, football and sing along to 88.8, all in the car.
Huda, who has to shuttle between Jahra and Salwa, actually takes pride in the ride. Her father, who works in Salwa, drops and picks her up every day. "It's an exclusive time that my father and me share together," she said with a smile, adding, "I don't want to buy a car. Not because it's uncommon for a woman to drive in Jahra, but I don't want my dad to drive alone.
Henna, Usma, Jaya, Soya and Waseema, who describe themselves as "birds of the same feather" go to work together primarily because they get "feedback about the workplace" and "opportunities to correct and improve career-wise." However, sharing workplace news grows into gossiping, admitted Henna. Besides the benefits, sharing a seat has its own negative aspects. They are, according to them:
If the driver is sick, it affects the rhythm.
A friend quit carpooling because one of the commuters smokes.
Wanting to go to sleep while going back from work - But it's only a dream.
Friends become foes because of being late at the cost of others' time.
Fights over the radio channels!
But despite the friction, they admit, they flock back to the car because it's almost like their second home.
