കുവൈറ്റില് മാവേലി കുടുംബസമേതം എത്തുന്നു
മഹാബലി വിവാഹിതനല്ലെന്ന വയ്പിനെ കലാകാരന്റെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യമെടുത്ത് പുനര്നിര്മ്മിക്കുന്ന കാഴ്ച കുവൈറ്റിലെ മംഗഫില് കാണാം വെള്ളിയാഴ്ച (aug 27) വൈകിട്ട് മഗ്രിബ് കഴിഞ്ഞ നേരം. മാവേലിയെ സഭാര്യനും 2 കുട്ടികളുടെ പിതാവുമാക്കി രംഗത്തെഴുന്നള്ളിക്കുന്നത് കുവൈറ്റിലെ പ്രശസ്ത നാടകനടനും സംവിധായകനുമായ ത്രിശൂര് സ്വദേശി ബാബു ചാക്കോളയാണ്. മാവേലി കല്യാണം കഴിച്ചയാളാണെന്ന 'ഷോക്ക്' ഇല്ലാതാക്കുവാന് നാടകീയമായാവും 'ഓണത്തപ്പകുടുംബം' രംഗത്തെത്തുക. 'പത്താം നില' എന്തു കൊണ്ട് എട്ടാം നിലയില് പൊട്ടി?
മാനസികരോഗികളോടും രോഗത്തോടും കുടുംബവും സമൂഹവും ആശുപത്രികളും കാട്ടുന്ന വിവേചനം ഇന്നസന്റായി പറഞ്ഞ 'പത്താം നിലയിലെ തീവണ്ടി' എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിന് എന്തു പറ്റിയിരിക്കും? ആബാല'വ്രുദ്ധ'ജനങ്ങളും കണ്ടിരിക്കേണ്ട സിനിമയെന്ന് പൈസാ മുടക്കിയവര് പോലും ചിന്തിക്കാത്ത ഈ 'സാരോപദേശ-മോറല്' ചിത്രത്തില് അണിയറക്കാര്ക്ക് ചിലതെങ്കിലും ചെയ്ത് നാലു പേരെക്കൂടി കാണിക്കാമായിരുന്നു. ഉദ്ദേശശുദ്ധിയുള്ള പ്രമേയം വേണ്ട ചികില്സ ലഭിക്കാതെ പോയി രോഗമായി വളര്ന്ന വിധി ചിത്രത്തിന് വന്നു പോയല്ലോ. ആരോടാണ് ഡെന്നീസ് ജോസഫ്-ജോഷി മാത്യു മാപ്പു പറയുക ദൈവമേ!
മദ്യപിക്കുന്നത് കൊണ്ടാണ്, ശങ്കരന് എന്ന മധ്യവയസന് (ഇന്നസെന്റ്) സ്കിസോഫ്രേനിയ പിടിപെട്ടതെന്ന് വീട്ടുകാരും ഡോക്ടര്മാരും പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചപ്പോള് ചിത്തഭ്രമമുള്ളതിനാലാണ് നിങ്ങള് മദ്യപിച്ചതെന്ന് ഒരു നല്ല ഡോക്ടര് (അനൂപ് മേനോന്) ശങ്കരനോട് പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. ബിസിനസ് ചെയ്ത് കടം വന്ന് ഒരു മറവി കിട്ടാന് കുടിക്കുന്ന ശങ്കരനെ ആത്മഗതം ചെയ്യിപ്പിച്ചാല് പോര, കാണിക്കണമായിരുന്നു. ആശുപത്രി-തടവറയില് കിടക്കുന്ന ശങ്കരനെക്കൊണ്ട് ഇത്രമാത്രം കത്തെഴുതിക്കണമായിരുന്നോ? ഒരിക്കലും കാണാന് വരാത്ത മകന് രാമുവിനോടുള്ള സ്നേഹം പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കാന്, മറുപടി കിട്ടാതിരിക്കുന്നതിലൂടെ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ നിസ്സഹായവസ്ഥയും വ്യക്തമാക്കുവാനും, ശങ്കരന്റെ കത്തെഴുത്ത്, ഇടവിട്ടില്ലാതെ വോയ്സ് ഓവറും, സിനിമയെ സഹായിച്ചോ? ഡെന്നീസ് ജോസഫിന്റെ കലാകൌമുദിക്കഥ എങ്ങനെയിരുന്നാലും സിനിമാഭാഷ്യത്തിന് ജോഷി മാത്യു ഉത്തരവാദിയാകുമല്ലൊ.

'തന്റെ ശമ്പളത്തീന്ന് അയാള്ക്ക് ഒരു ഡോസിനുള്ള മരുന്ന് കൊടുക്കുമോ' എന്ന് സൂപ്രണ്ടിനെക്കൊണ്ട് നല്ല ഡോക്ടറോട് ചോദിച്ച് ഡോക്ടര്മാരുടെ നിസ്സഹായാവസ്ഥയും വെളിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു ഡെന്നീസ്. എന്നാലും ഡയലോഗുകളേക്കാള് ദ്രുശ്യങ്ങള്ക്ക് പ്രാധാന്യം കൊടുക്കണമായിരുന്നുവെന്നത് 'ന്യൂദല്ഹി'യുടെ കഥാകാരന് 'മറന്നു'. ഡോക്യുമെന്ററി സ്റ്റൈലിലുള്ള കാമറ (വിനോദ് ഇല്ലംപള്ളി) നന്ന്.
അഭിനേതാക്കളാണ് കൂടുതലും സിനിമ കളഞ്ഞത്. ഇന്നസെന്റ് കഥാപാത്രത്തിന്റെ ഗൌരവം മറന്നില്ല. ആശുപത്രിയില് പ്രവേശിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനു മുന്പുള്ള ശങ്കരന്റെ ഫ്രഷ് ഭാവം കാണിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കില് റേന്ച് കിട്ടുമായിരുന്നു. ചിത്തഭ്രമമത്തില് നിന്നും പിടി വിടുവിനാവാഞ്ഞ രാമു ജയസൂര്യയുടെ ഏറ്റവും മോശം റോളാണ്. 'ഇതുപോലൊരു പിതാവിന്റെ പുത്രനായി ജനിക്കുന്നതാണ് പിത്രുശാപം' എന്ന് മുറപ്പെണ്ണിനോട് പറയാനുള്ള നിസ്സഹായത കലര്ന്ന രോഷം എവിടെ? കിണറ്റീന്ന് കാലിബക്കറ്റ് കോരുന്നതൊഴിച്ച് ജയസൂര്യയുടെ ക്ളോസപ് ഷോട്ടുകളെവിടെ? ഈ സിനിമക്ക് കിട്ടാവുന്ന മികച്ച ക്ളൈമാക്സ് ഉണ്ടായിട്ടും ജയന് സ്വയം ഭേദിക്കാന് പറ്റിയില്ല. ശങ്കരന്റെ ഭാര്യ (ശ്രീകല്?) മറ്റൊരു നിരാശ. ഷിബു ചക്രവര്ത്തി-എസ്പി വെങ്കിടേഷ്മാരുടെ മധു ബാലക്രിഷ്ണന് ഗാനം ഉദ്ദേശിച്ച ക്ളാസിലായി. മധുവിന്, പക്ഷെ രാമായണ കാ'ണ്ഠ്'മെന്ന് തറപ്പിക്കേണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
ജീവിതത്തില് നിന്നും പ്രതീക്ഷ എടുത്ത് കളയുന്ന ഒരു രോഗത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയുന്ന ചിത്രത്തില് സിനിമയില് നിന്നും പ്രതീക്ഷ എടുത്ത് കളയുന്നില്ല ഇത്തരം ശ്രമങ്ങള് എന്ന് പക്ഷെ സമ്മതിക്കണം.

വിവാഹ'മോചിത' മുക്കുവ ആത്മകഥ
വിഷയലമ്പടനും ധനാസക്തിയുമുള്ള കബളിപ്പിക്കല് പൊലീസുകാരന്-ഭര്ത്താവില് നിന്നും വിവാഹമോചനം നേടിയ സ്ഥിതിയിലേക്ക് ജീവിതം എത്തിയതെങ്ങനെ എന്ന് വിവരിക്കുന്നു 'ഒരു മുക്കുവപ്പെണ്ണിന്റെ ആത്മകഥ'യിലൂടെ ലീന കൊച്ചുതോപ്പില്. (പരിധി പബ്ളിക്കേഷന്സ്, 50 രൂ., 72 പേജ്). മദ്യപാനിയായ അപ്പനും ചാരായവില്പ്പനക്കാരി അമ്മക്കും (വാളുമേരി) പിറന്ന മൂത്ത മകള്, നാല് ആങ്ങളമാര്ക്ക് ഏക പെങ്ങള്, ലീനയുടെ കോണ്വെന്റ് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം കന്യാസ്ത്രീയാക്കാന് അവളെ പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചു. അമ്മയുടെ നിര്ബന്ധത്താല് വിവാഹത്തിന് സമ്മതിച്ച ലീനക്ക് പിന്നീട് 'കണ്ണീരില് കുതിര്ന്ന' ദിനങ്ങളായിരുന്നെന്ന് പുസ്തകം ആണയിടുന്നു. ഇസ്രയേലില് ജോലിക്ക് പോയ ലീന സ്വന്തം കാലില് നില്ക്കാമെന്നായപ്പോള് ഡൈവോഴ്സ് നോട്ടീസ് നല്കി 'തന്റേടത്തോടെ എഴുന്നേറ്റു നില്ക്കുന്ന' ചിത്രം പച്ചയായി കാണാം.
പുസ്തകത്തില് നിന്ന്: 'ഒരു കാരണവശാലും നീയും നിന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരും ടോയ്ലറ്റില് പോകരുത്' എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് ടോയ്ലറ്റ് പൂട്ടി (അയാള്). ... ചില സന്ദര്ഭങ്ങളില് ഞാനും അനുജന്മാരും മലവിസര്ജ്ജനം നടത്തിയത് ഏതൊക്കെ രീതികളിലായിരുന്നെന്ന് ആലോചിക്കാന് പോലും വയ്യ. ഇരുളില് ജനാല തുറന്ന് വിസര്ജ്ജ്യങ്ങള് പുറത്തേക്ക് നീട്ടിയെറിയുകയാണ് പതിവ്. ....അനുജന്മാര് രണ്ടുപേരും സ്കൂളില് നിന്നും കൊണ്ടുവരുന്ന പയറുകഞ്ഞിയായിരുന്നു ഞങ്ങളുടെ ഭക്ഷണം.
'ദുഷ്ടനായ വില്ലന് കഥാപാത്രം മോഹന്ദാസിനു പോലും ഈ പുസ്തകം കരുണയേകുന്നു' എന്ന് അവതാരികയില് ബാബു കുഴിമറ്റം. നളിനി ജമീലയുടെയും തസ്കരന്റെയും 'വിജയ'കഥകള്ക്ക് ശേഷം ഷക്കീലയുടെ ഡ്യൂപ്പ് സുരയ്യ ബാനു(?)വിന്റെ ആത്മകഥയും സിസ്റ്റര് ജെസ്മിയുടെ 'ആമേനൊ'പ്പം പുസ്തകക്കടകളില് ചന്തം പൂണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. സ്തുതി, പുതിയ കാലത്തിന്.

a man for all seasons
It is not easy being a farmer in this scorching heat. So farmers in Tom's Abdaly farm, where he is the head farmer, would go home for a vacation and come back late November when soil is prepared for the next cultivation. But Tom Thomas, 42, is not going home to India where he has a family. He told his sponsor that he could do a little bit of carpentry work, and that, he does not need long holidays. The sponsor happily agreed and now their farm has a workshop of wooden work, with the busy Tom making furniture of all kinds.
The date palm tree farm, Tom and three co-workers cultivate maze, onion, garlic, beetroot, brinjal (eggplant), lady's fingers, carrot and sunflower. They have made thatched huts out of palm leaves to store onions and garlic. A bit of engineering is present too. Next month, the farmer in Tom will have to remain fully awake: A little less than half a hectare of land has to be ploughed before the soil is mixed with cow dung and water, ready to sow maze seeds. Maze is mostly cultivated during the months of December-January. Most vegetables are farmed in winter, only onion is cultivated till early June, Tom explains.
But seasons do not limit Tom who is busy throughout the year. Apart from assuming different roles as a watchman, storekeeper and cook for four people, the farmer-carpenter takes care of doves and the three dogs that live on the farm. Plus, he has an off-the- track fascination too: presenting witty tricks on stage. He produces flowers from an empty bag or turns a long piece of cloth into a sturdy stick. These are stage items that Tom is famous for.
Of all the skills, Tom is mostly sought after by his 'farm-mates' for one skill - to kill poisonous snakes and scorpions on the farm. Here, Tom's magic wand turns into a tragic weapon for uninvited guests.

of sleeping in the car
This summer I heard two stories of people who've chosen to sleep in their cars. In one case, this choice was forced on a friend when the residents of Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh were hit by power cuts, with my friend taking his three-month-old baby out to his car, turning the AC on and staying awake while the baby slept in the backseat.
I took note of that young father's plight and felt relieved at my own good fortune because Hawally, where I live, didn't have the same problems and secondly, because I was heading for a vacation. After I returned, I called the 'car-sleeping-father' who worked at a car sales showroom. He told me he didn't do that any longer as the so-called power crisis had been resolved. 'So, businesswise, cars with a better AC were in higher demand?' I asked.
Nope", he responded; "What sold more were the rechargeable fans." Those little fans, he told me, would work continuously for two hours in the absence of electricity and could then be recharged for the next two hours once the electricity was back. I imagined how young mothers would treat the fans like their beloved babies, as they would find it bizarre, I think, to go to a car to take rest.
The other story - one man's plight in the night-is a bit weird and rather eerie since it happens in the early hours. I have nightmares after listening to the story told to me by Benny, a forty-something Indian expatriate who lives in Hawally and works at a Kuwait City fast food chain outlet and who would certainly qualify as a survivor of any stress test. It goes as follows: Benny came home after a night shift at around 5:30 am and could find no parking space for his small car - no surprise so far.
What he did was an example of the concept of turning a crisis into an opportunity. He parked his car on the road, blocking a car belonging to an acquaintance living in his apartment building. In this situation, again, I consider myself fortunate as I can always find my parking space, two blocks away from my home, without difficulty. I asked my friend, "Isn't that a problem for you to sleep in the car on the road all alone?"
"No", he said. "It's become a habit. But now I have a new problem".
"What?" I asked nervously, imagining various terrible possibilities - burglary? Threats? Kidnap attempts? "The man from my apartment block has gone on holiday," he answered. "Now I need to find another car to park behind!

I took note of that young father's plight and felt relieved at my own good fortune because Hawally, where I live, didn't have the same problems and secondly, because I was heading for a vacation. After I returned, I called the 'car-sleeping-father' who worked at a car sales showroom. He told me he didn't do that any longer as the so-called power crisis had been resolved. 'So, businesswise, cars with a better AC were in higher demand?' I asked.
Nope", he responded; "What sold more were the rechargeable fans." Those little fans, he told me, would work continuously for two hours in the absence of electricity and could then be recharged for the next two hours once the electricity was back. I imagined how young mothers would treat the fans like their beloved babies, as they would find it bizarre, I think, to go to a car to take rest.
The other story - one man's plight in the night-is a bit weird and rather eerie since it happens in the early hours. I have nightmares after listening to the story told to me by Benny, a forty-something Indian expatriate who lives in Hawally and works at a Kuwait City fast food chain outlet and who would certainly qualify as a survivor of any stress test. It goes as follows: Benny came home after a night shift at around 5:30 am and could find no parking space for his small car - no surprise so far.
